Our client needed to ship multiple 40,000 lb. steel cylinders overseas. The primary challenge was the size and weight of each silencer, requiring a robust packaging solution for safe handling and transport. As the silencers were transported breakbulk on the deck of an overseas freight ship, the packaging needed to prevent shifting and tipping, ensuring stability during ocean transit while complying with international shipping regulations and safety standards.
Craters & Freighters developed a custom-engineered solution to address the shipping challenges of the 40,000 lb. steel cylinders. Utilizing our client’s engineering drawings, we created a 3D representation of the cylinder in SolidWorks®, allowing us to accurately design heavy-duty cradles from custom-milled 10×10 lumber. These cradles were tailored to fit the silencers’ unique geometry, providing optimal support and movement prevention during transport.
Heavy-duty straps secured the silencers to the cradles, minimizing the risk of damage. The cradles were pre-manufactured and delivered on-site, where they were efficiently positioned with a forklift. An overhead gantry crane facilitated the safe loading of the silencers, providing a turn-key solution for transport overseas.
The custom engineered solution provided by Craters & Freighters delivered several key benefits and positive outcomes for our client.
Improved Protection: The custom-designed cradles effectively supported the 40,000 lb. steel cylindrical silencers, ensuring they were securely held in place throughout transport. The heavy-duty straps and robust construction prevented any movement or shifting during transit, safeguarding the silencers from potential damage.
Cost Savings: By utilizing CAD software to design the cradles and planning the dimensions precisely before cutting any materials, we minimized waste and optimized material use. This approach not only reduced costs but also contributed to a more efficient and economical solution.
