Challenge
Our client needed a specialized crating solution to transport a multi-ton steel shaft safely. The immense weight and size of the shaft required a custom crate to prevent damage during transit, as standard solutions were inadequate. Precise engineering was essential to ensure the crate could support the load and align with our client’s specifications.
Solution
Craters & Freighters engineered a custom crate by first creating a 3D model based on our client’s engineering drawings using CAD software. The crate was built with heavy-duty lumber to support the shaft’s weight and maintain structural integrity. Custom cradles were designed to secure the shaft and minimize movement. After fabrication, the crate was transported to the client’s site for careful loading with an overhead gantry crane, facilitating quick shipment due to a tight timeline.
The design incorporated protective features to safeguard the shaft, ensuring it was securely crated and ready for transport while adhering to shipping standards.
Outcome
The custom crating solution effectively addressed the challenges of transporting the steel shaft. The robust design, featuring heavy-duty lumber blocking and custom cradles, secured the shaft throughout transit, minimizing damage risks. Coordinated loading with the gantry crane met the client’s schedule, contributing to operational efficiency. The crate complied with shipping regulations, preventing delays and maintaining project timelines.
Cost savings resulted from in-house fabrication, allowing for effective cost control without unexpected expenses. Overall, the solution exceeded the client’s expectations, providing a secure, compliant, and cost-effective approach to handling the steel shaft during transit.
Key Features:
- Size and Shape Customization: The crate was precisely engineered to match the shaft’s dimensions, ensuring no unnecessary movement.
- Protective Layers: Cradles and blocking were lined with felt for cushioning against abrasion and vibrations, protecting the shaft’s finish.
- Specialized Cradles or Blocking/Bracing: Custom cradles and heavy-duty lumber blocking stabilized the shaft, preventing shifting and maintaining integrity during transit.
